Altrincham: Body of Woman found dead in Bridgewater Canal

Emergency services were called out this morning (10 December) following reports of a body being seen in the Bridgewater Canal close to Atlantic Street in Altrincham.

Police closed off the Bridgewater Canal towpath at the bridge under the A56 Manchester Road behind Atlantic Street. Specialist police divers arrived and went looking for the individual earlier this morning, and shortly after, they found the body of a woman.

Officers will now be trying to establish the identity of the woman and the circumstances surrounding her death. Specialist officers will notify the woman’s family.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “Shortly before 8:30 am on Wednesday, 10 December 2025, officers were called to Atlantic Street, Altrincham, to reports of a body in the water.

“Emergency services attended, and sadly, the body of a female has been recovered from the water. Officers are currently working to establish her identity to inform and support her loved ones, and the circumstances surrounding her death.”
