January is one of the busiest months for the NHS. Small actions can make a big difference. Check in on neighbours. Make sure prescriptions are up-to-date. Generally look after your health.

NHS staff across Greater Manchester shared their top tips with practical actions. Everyone can take these actions to stay healthy, warm, and supported.

Winter tips

  • Kenny Li, chief pharmacist, NHS Greater Manchester said: “Make sure you have enough prescription medication at home. Order repeat prescriptions at least seven days in advance.  Speak to your local pharmacy for advice on minor illnesses like colds, sore throats, or coughs. It’s also useful to have a stocked medicine cabinet with basics like a thermometer, paracetamol, or ibuprofen.”
  • Sandeep Ranote, clinical director, mental health, NHS Greater Manchester said: “Winter can feel isolating. Stay in touch with others and ask for support early as your mental health is just as important as your physical health. There are services across Greater Manchester ready to help. Call NHS 111 (option 2) or use NHS 111 online.”
  • Laura Jones, clinical specialist pelvic health physiotherapist, Bolton NHS Foundation Trust advised: “Short walks or light stretching every day keep your joints moving and your energy up. Wear layers indoors when it’s cold, move a little every hour, and remove any trip hazards at home.”
  • Rachel Murphy, district nurse, Tameside and Glossop NHS Foundation Trust has this advice: “Look in on others – a quick phone call or visit can make a huge difference, especially for older or vulnerable neighbours, friends, or family. If you can, try and help with small tasks like shopping or cooking.”
  • Huma Waheed, emergency department matron, Stockport NHS Foundation Trust said: “For urgent but non-life-threatening issues, use NHS 111 online or call 111. You will be directed to the right service. NHS 111 is available 24/7, and support is offered in multiple languages including British Sign Language.”

Dr Manisha Kumar, chief clinical officer, NHS Greater Manchester, said: “Winter, and sudden cold snaps, can be challenging, especially for people with long-term health conditions. Preparing in advance, organising prescriptions, knowing where to get support, or checking in on others can make a big difference. By doing so, we help reduce avoidable pressures and ensure hospital care is available when it’s needed most.”
