Free Family Science Weekend at Trafford Centre

Families are invited to enjoy a free, fun-filled weekend of hands-on science activities as FunLab takes over Trafford Centre on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 March, marking the launch of British Science Week.

The two-day celebration is hosted by the Faculty of Science and Engineering at The University of Manchester, bringing robots, dinosaurs, experiments, and interactive activities to life for visitors of all ages.

Simon Layton, Centre Director at Trafford Centre, said: “We’re thrilled to welcome FunLab to the centre and provide families with an unforgettable – and completely free – experience. From robot dogs to giant dinosaurs, there’s something to amaze everyone.”

Dinosaur Zone – Outside Vodafone

Step back in time with spectacular dinosaur displays and meet palaeontologists who will reveal fascinating secrets of the prehistoric world. Families can enjoy selfie moments, handle genuine fossils, and find out how scientists understand ancient life.

Highlights include:

• See our Gorgosaurus, one of the most complete and best-preserved tyrannosaur skeletons found to date and a close relative of the famous T. Rex.
• Visitors may also be able to meet Professor Phil Manning, Palaeontologist Chair of Natural History at The University of Manchester and Director of Science at the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi.
• Handle real fossils, including a giant shark tooth and mammoth tusk.
• Play an interactive “higher or lower” dinosaur timeline game.
• Create your own creature in the “Make a Monster” craft zone.

Robot Zone – Main Dome & Orient Way

Discover smart robots that move, react and perform crowd‑pleasing tricks. Young engineers can test their skills, control mini‑bots and learn how robotics keeps people safe.

Activities include:

• Meet the amazing Robot Dog, who can walk, jump and sit and explore how these robots work to protect humans.
• Watch Robot demonstrations and have a go at programming one yourself.

The Orient – Flight Simulator & Experimental Zone

Soar into the science of flight and take the controls in an exciting simulator experience (ages 7+). Young aviators can explore how aircraft design, weather and environments affect flight. Families can also enjoy a wide mix of creative, sensory and scientific fun, including:

• Hands‑on chemistry experiments.
• Interactive science games.
• Sensory physics activities for toddlers, teens and everyone in between.
• Plus much more across multiple activity stalls.
