Trafford Council has hired an extra gully wagon, which they claim will significantly strengthen drain clearance operations throughout the borough.

With the amount of rain we have had, huge puddles have been forming around the many grids on our roads, which can be a safety issue for cyclists. Often, potholes are covered by standing water, which can also cause issues with vehicles if deep enough.

Much of the time, it’s leaves that block road drains, and not enough is being done about that issue. Trafford residents will be happy, though, if everything goes to plan; no more cars trying to splash people walking on the pavement would be very welcome.

Looking at the longer-range weather forecast shows more rain and wind, so the biggest test for Trafford’s extra bit of help is still to come. Either way, we have to be grateful for any extra help to rid ourselves of these blocked drains for good.

Cllr Stephen Adshead, Executive Member for Highways, Environmental and Traded Services, said:

“With the wet weather we’ve experienced recently, I welcome this additional investment to fund an extra gully wagon and expand the work we do to keep drains clear.

While wider action is needed to tackle the climate crisis, proactive measures like this are essential to help mitigate the impacts of torrential rain and flash flooding, and to keep our communities safe.”
