Trafford Council’s environmental improvement officers have been in the Partington area for a week to give the area a spring clean with the help of offenders under a Government Payback scheme.
The Community Payback Scheme is a government initiative for criminals convicted of a variety of crimes to do voluntary work from 40 to 300 hours a week. Trafford has claimed they picked up six bags of rubbish from Oak Road Park; it’s not been revealed how many attended or if they did other things in the area.
Trafford’s environmental officers will install cameras in fly-tip hotspots to try and catch those that make the place look dreadful. It also brings in more vermin in the area; people have already been caught in the area and faced a huge fine after a court appearance.
They will also be out and about talking with dog walkers about cleaning up after their pets and organizing cleanup events. We know that the majority of dog walkers do clean up after their pets, and cleanups happen often with the Cross Lane Park Group making sure things are tidy.
Some street cleaning has been done, and they have been talking to the public about the ‘Love Where You Live’ campaign, which is useful. They will end the week tour by reporting messy gardens, dirty bins, and any abandoned vehicles they see. Businesses will be spoken to about disposing of waste properly, and residents will have a skip for any unwanted items.
The Improvement officers become enforcement officers as they will also check for any illegal parking and unregistered vehicles.
Along with a spring clean, other things these officers will do is install cameras in fly-tip hot spots and find dog walkers to talk to about cleaning up after their pets and organising other cleanup events.
There are plans to also focus on other areas of Trafford as part of the environmental improvement campaign.
Cllr Stephen Adshead, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Highways, Environmental and Traded Services, said:
“We are carrying out this week of action to show Partington residents how much we care about the environment they live in. This Council is committed to improving Trafford and making it more beautiful than it already is.
“We will do everything we can to target and prosecute those people who fly tip, litter and allow their dogs to foul in our parks and on our streets. We will not tolerate crimes of this nature in our borough and we will come after you if you are caught dumping rubbish in our communities. Thank you to everyone involved in this week of action.”
If you witness anyone carrying out a crime to the environment like fly tipping or littering, you are asked to email: environmentalenforcement@trafford.gov.uk
