A resident at a care home in Sale has had her long-held wish granted thanks to a surprise visit to one of the nation’s most famous streets.

When the team at Care UK’s Oakfield Croft, on Oakfield off Washway Road, learned of former Granada Television Picture Editor Joan Riley’s desire to return to the set of Coronation Street, they set about making her dream a reality.

Joan’s connection to the TV station stretches back to 1960, when she joined as a part-time copy typist on the local evening news. She quickly progressed, moving into the promotions and scheduling departments and serving as Picture Editor in her final role before leaving the company after 28 years.

One of the highlights of her career – and a story she often shares with residents and team members at Oakfield Croft – was working on Coronation Street, selecting clips for the soap and meeting much-loved cast members including Pat Phoenix and William Roache.

On her special day out, team members surprised Joan with a trip to the Coronation Street Experience, where she explored the cobbles once more and reconnected with a place that shaped so much of her career.

Joan said: “My favourite part of the visit was meeting a gentleman whose father I had worked with many years ago when I worked at Granada.

“The sets and locations themselves felt very familiar to me, but what really meant the most was the nostalgia. Meeting him and seeing the wall of years of Coronation Street brought back so many fond memories from my time working with the team.

“Finding out I had worked with his dad all those years ago made the day feel very special – it was like taking a lovely little trip back in time. I enjoyed my stroll down memory lane.”

Joan’s experience was part of Care UK’s Wishing Tree initiative, in which each care home encourages residents to put forward their dreams, allowing them to reconnect with a past hobby or try something completely new.

Roxanne Walsh, Home Manager at Oakfield Croft, said: “Joan is a much-loved resident at the home. She often shares fascinating stories about her time working at Granada Television, including riding on a Viper to work!

“Something she often reminisces about is her time working on Coronation Street. When she shared her wish to return to the set, we knew we had to make it happen.

“Seeing Joan’s face light up as she walked along the cobbles was incredibly heartwarming. It was a special day filled with nostalgia, laughter, and pride. A big thank you to the wonderful team who helped bring such meaningful memories back to life.”

Oakfield Croft provides residential, dementia, and short-term respite care, and has been rated ‘good’ in all five areas by the Care Quality Commission.
