For many households, keeping on top of bills can feel overwhelming.
Around 40% of people with prepayment meters are using them to repay energy debt, and millions across the UK face this challenge every year, often while juggling other essential costs like rent, food, and council tax.
That’s where the British Gas Energy Trust’s Individuals and Families Fund (I&F) can help.
I&F offers grants of up to £1,700 to prepayment meter customers in energy debt, regardless of their energy supplier. These grants are designed to clear arrears and help people move towards greater financial stability.
Applying is straightforward. You may be eligible if you:
- Have debt between £50 and £1,700 on a prepayment meter
- Live in England, Scotland, or Wales
- Have received money advice within the last six months
I&F has helped people like Mr H*, a 56-year-old registered disabled ex-armed forces veteran, living in a local authority property with his non-dependent disabled child.
He relies on Employment & Support Allowance and Personal Independence Payment, as both he and his child are unable to work.
Mr H suffers from multiple serious health conditions, including combat PTSD and spinal damage requiring a walking aid. His health is unlikely to improve, limiting his ability to increase his income. His budget shows he can cover his ongoing energy costs, but is unable to clear his arrears.
With assistance from Citizens Advice, he applied for support and was awarded an energy grant of £1,290 from the British Gas Energy Trust.

It is great to see the BGET (British Gas Energy Trust) doing things to help those on prepayment meters that rip off the most vulnerable in society. There are people out there unable to keep the lights on or keep warm, many of whom have to borrow from family members or friends, which leaves them short the moment they get any government money or even money from an employer.
