Shortly before 2am Jan 1st officers were called to reports of a collision between a taxi and a pedestrian on Manchester Road near to the junction of Navigation Road.
A man in his 50s died at the scene following a collision with a silver hackney carriage, the driver of the taxi stopped at the scene.
His family have been informed but formal identification has not taken place.
Police Constable Peter Cunningham, from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this devastating time and we are currently offering them our support.
“Officers are trying to ascertain exactly what happened and we are appealing to anyone with information about this collision to please come forward.
“Anyone with dash-cam footage prior to the incident is also urged to get in touch.”
