John Smith finished his political career in a controversial way, having spent all his time fighting for the residents of his ward in Bucklow St Martins under the red flag of Labour.
Things went downhill at the last local elections and for whatever reasons decided to defect to the Tories, this was controversial, we know he was not happy with the selection of James Wright.
John offered me a statement and his last words as a councillor, he said:
“It’s been a real privilege to represent Bucklow & I simply hope I’ve been some use!
For Linda & I, it’s the last chapter now & we have bought a rural smallholding to work it out on. I’d have loved to synchronise selling home/business, buying farm & reaching next scheduled election, but, it just wouldn’t happen.”
It was his last sentence that was interesting saying that “he did not care about politics”, but loved speaking for where he lived and worked, and claims he is too old to do it all again.
His time on the parish council may also be coming to an end although no confirmation on this just yet.
A by-election will be taking place sometime soon.
We wish John and his wife all the best for the future.
