Trafford MV played Oldham at the weekend looking for a good result to prevent falling behind further in the league.
Team changes were again very evident on the day however it was good to see that some players returned to action following injury and absence.
The reshuffled MV opened well and spent long periods in the Oldham half with good driving play from the pack setting the standard. Playing into the wind MV minimised their kicking and kept ball in hand through several phases of play often making good yards and keeping the visiting defence under pressure. With 20 mins gone MV were pressing strongly in the left corner, camped on the Oldham line.
It was MV’s number 8 Jon Feldman who picked up at the base of a ruck and lunged over a body of players to get the touchdown. From wideout left Pat Eccles struck the conversion into the strong wind only to see the well hit shot glance off the upright 5-0 to MV.
Trafford continued to have much of the better play during the second quarter of the game but with half time approaching Oldham made a break through the centre and then linked wide with the wing who raced home outpacing the cover defence. With the wind behind them the try was comfortably converted to take the lead going into the break 5-7.
The sides changed ends with the strong wind now behind MV but the visiting team came out with a renewed vigour. taking the game to MV it now looked like a different Oldham team. However MV were resolute in the defence with Danny Burke and Andrew Moore putting in some massive hits in the centre and good work in the pack from Quigley and Ward.
Oldham extended their lead following strong forward pressure as a mass of bodies crashed over the line forcing the ball down. The conversion was missed, 5-12 to Oldham. Recognising the competitiveness of the game and the close score Oldham chose to take a shot at goal from their next penalty opportunity to extend their narrow lead 5-15.
As time was running out MV came right back into the reckoning as Andrew Moore crashed through the Oldham defence from close quarters and scored wide to the right of the posts. Eccles struck his kick to the far post looking for the wind to draw the ball in however for the second time in the game the post was hit and the ball bounced back 10-15.
Oldham held out and MV collected a losing bonus point however despite the good performance on the day MV needed to ge ta league win under their belt. With the bottom 4 in the league now sitting away from the rest and MV heading that group they need to maintain competitve form. With some big players back MV need to raise their game and compete as a unit to gather valuable league points.
This weekend MV are away at title contenders Widnes who won 12-26 at Tyldesley last weekend.
