Firefighters overwhelmed as holiday island Gran Canaria burns out of control

Thousands of people have been evacuated from the holiday island of Gran Canaria as fire continues to consume everything.

Wildfires have local firefighters tweeting that they have now become overwhelmed and although still fighting clearly need some outside help to contain this fire that has consumed 900 hectres.

It is thought a 55-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of starting the fire.

The military have been drafted in to help save the island.

The smoke is so bad people on neighbouring island Tenerefe can see it, and must be a little bit concerned.

At this time no information can be found about any travel advice for people from the UK travelling to the island, although we expect this to change if the situation gets any worse.
