Timperley Sports Club marked a milestone in its 142 year history on 28th September 2019 opening new floodlights and big things for national league hockey.

The replacement floodlights are the club’s latest investment this ambitious, member run club, has made at its Stockport Road, Altrincham site that is used by over 1100 club member and the local community, schools and universities.

The project kicks off the start of the next phase of development at the club that will include replacement of its two artificial turf sports pitches, improvements to access and parking and improvements to its clubhouse over the next three years. The £38,000 project has been funded entirely from members fund-raising to start the next phase of investment in the club following a £100,000 project to replace the cricket square and install drainage to improve its grass pitches in 2017-18.

The new floodlights were officially opened by Cllr Jan Baugh, Executive Lead for Culture and Leisure, Trafford Council and Chris Reece, Vice President of England Hockey as part of day to the opening weekend of the National League hockey season. For the first time Timperley Hockey has both its Women’s and Men’s 1st XI’s playing in the Conference North following the men’s promotion last season.

Nick Burnett, President of Timperley Sports Club said, “as well as investing in improved lighting for our community, school and club users of our artificial pitches, the new lights meet the requirements to play evening matches for our national league hockey”.

Timperley are the first club in the area to install 500Lux lights and will be playing evening national league hockey matches this season. The next home fixtures are on Saturday 5th October with the Timperley Men’s 1st team v Lichfield HC at 18:00. Nick Burnett said “the lights provide a springboard for hockey at Timperley and how we encourage more people to come and watch the sport that captured the nations hearts when GB women won Gold at the Rio Olympics”

Timperly Sports Club was Founded in 1877 as Timperley Cricket Club, the Stockport Road club has grown as a multi-sports offering cricket, hockey, junior football and lacrosse. The club has recently become a Community Benefit Society reflecting its role as a facility run by its members with offering a range of sport and community activities and facilities.

The club has over 1100 members including over 600 junior members (under 16).

The club has a long history of developing its facilities and since 1991 have raised funds, attached grant funding and partnership to invest over £1.75m in the site offering some of the best local sport and community facilities in the North West.

The next major phase investing in its community facilities is planned for the next 2 – 3 years.
