The New Year will be a time for some of us to get back to fitness and you are welcome to try Walking Rugby.
Trafford MV Rugby Club off Glebelands Road in Sale have been hosting Wed evening sessions for the last couple of years and have a well established group of regulars who have braved all weathers enjoying the fun and friendship developed whilst participating..
The sessions were originally started by Sale Sharks Community Trust but are now self run by Trafford MV in Sale.
Aimed ideally at overs 50’s (but not stringent as everybody is welcome) Walking Rugby, as its name suggests is a slowed down version of the game and it is gradually findings its place nationally as clubs across the country latch onto the idea for keeping former players involved and active.
The game is minimal contact, based on a 2 handed ‘touch’ off the opposition player, the teams are mixed gender and kicking of the ball is not allowed. The idea being to move the ball and yourselves to create spaces and gaps in the defence for the attacking team to exploit and score a try.
The pitch is sized to suit the numbers playing to ensure games are competitive and not too big that we can’t enjoy our social get together in the bar afterwards.
If you feel you cannot manage the walking rugby you can always join in for a chat and friendly get together from 7.30pm in the Clubhouse.
Our current crop of talent includes players with a variety of joint replacements including hips, knees and ankles, ladies and gents who had never picked up a rugby ball and players advised to do a bit of exercise as part of their medical advice.
Players come from all over Trafford and Cheshire you are very welcome to join in and give it a try. Former players from Bowdon, Kersal, Heaton Moor, Old Salians and Carrington as well as Trafford MV regularly attend the sessions in all weathers rain, hail, snow and frost as well as summer sunshine.
Sessions are fun and players are encouraged to walk as much or as little as their fitness dictates.
Our sessions run on Wed evenings at 6.30pm under floodlights at our ground on Finny Bank Road in Sale, off Glebeland Rd and our first one of 2020 will be on Jan 2nd.
You can turn up on the night or message firstname.lastname@example.org for more info. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Walking Talking New Year from our Walking Rugby group at Trafford MV RFCC.
