COVID-19: Care home shocker thousands dead and many more will die

Since the start of this dreadful pandemic thousands of elderly people have died due to Covid-19, the majority of residents in care homes who tested negative got the virus as hospitals discharged patients with Covid-19 who then passed it on to everyone else at a care home.

This then added to the overall COVID-19 death toll, according to the report seen 31% of patients in care homes died, more will die because care homes are being asked to take on people that have COVID-19, we have even heard of situations where the government are giving care home managers incentives to bring them in.

Up and down the country elderly patients were turning up in ambulances with managers of care homes in a tricky situation where they could not send them back to hospital as it could cause serious problems with there health.

We know the Tory government have the habit of blaming other people for everything they do wrong which is most of the time, however no one can blame the NHS on this one!

We are aware of a programme on Channel 4 who done a report on care homes, interestingly they claim that Trafford Council allegedly had a contract that eligible care homes will receive COVID-positive patients within 2 hours of the hospital discharging them.

A document seen by Channel 4 states “Some of these patients may have Covid-19 whether symptomatic or asymptomatic.”

In response to the report on Channel 4 the Trafford Lib Dems have issued a statement:

Trafford Liberal Democrats were alarmed to see the Channel 4 news reports on the 17th September about local care homes.

It was alleged that a contract from Trafford Council outlined that eligible care homes will receive COVID-positive patients within 2 hours of the hospital designating them ready for discharge. The document states “some of these patients may have COVID-19, whether symptomatic or asymptomatic”.

There were 31% of deaths registered as COVID-19-related in care homes in the UK.

Trafford Liberal Democrats are calling on Trafford Council to re-consider the moving of patients from the care sector who are COVID-positive.

COVID-19 is a very contagious disease, and even with measures in place to minimise the risk of spread within the care sector, transferring COVID-positive patients from hospitals to care homes will jeopardize previous work to reduce the spread in vulnerable groups.

Liberal Democrats believe that we need to be doing everything we can to protect the care sector from COVID-19 and Trafford Council needs to rethink their alleged plans. Residents of care homes deserve better than this approach.

Dr Anna Fryer, Stretford and Urmston Liberal Democrat spokesperson said:

“It feels like we are set to repeat the mistakes of the first wave by introducing COVID into care homes where staff have been working incredibly hard to keep COVID out, and protect vulnerable residents.”

Dr Fryer continued: “It has been heart-breaking to hear from residents who have been unable to see their loved ones in care homes. When people are making such sacrifices, it seems terribly wrong for their previous efforts to keep the virus out to be in vain, if people are now brought in with the virus.”

Trafford Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Julian Newgrosh said:

“I am proud that we currently accept residents to care homes, only with a COVID negative certificate. This change would be worrying, dangerous and completely unnecessary.”

We are still waiting for Trafford Council to comment.
