With a desire to still celebrate Christmas, 24 independent business owners in Urmston have come together to create Urmston’s first Indie Advent.
Following the traditional dates of advent, starting on Tuesday 1st December and finishing on Thursday 24th December, Indie Advent is a virtual event featuring one of the 24 businesses each day.
Each individual business will decide what will appear from behind their advent calendar door, from launching a new product to introducing a new special offer, with the event finishing on Christmas Eve with a festive message from all.
From restaurants and pubs to coffee shops, retail stores, hairdressers and beauty salons, there is a real mix of independent businesses involved in Indie Advent, with the overriding objective to encourage people to shop local this Christmas and support independent businesses fighting for survival in Urmston.
Carol Chappell, owner of The Larder at 7, comments: “It’s been a really hard year for all our independent small businesses. Indie Advent was an idea I had that not only reinforces the community spirit in Urmston, but raises awareness of the many independent businesses in the town centre, all of whom have continually adapted throughout the year to trade as best they can.
“December will no doubt be a difficult month for us all with non-essential businesses excited to reopen and hospitality still limited to takeaway. However, Indie Urmston’s advent campaign will bring some cheer virtually, and with 24 businesses participating, we are ensuring there is something for everyone throughout the month. We hope the special offers, discounts, vouchers and product launches will inspire Urmston residents to shop local this Christmas.”
Scott Power, founder of the Indie Urmston Collective and owner of Get Chucked, adds: “Urmston has developed organically as a town centre and has a large variety of independent businesses, all of whom have had a terrible year. Indie Advent hopes to raise awareness of these businesses and encourage people to shop locally this Christmas. We hope it’s a huge success and people turn away from giant internet retailers to help their local community weather the COVID storm.”
