Southgate hugs Saka after his penalty miss: Pic ITV Sport

England’s dream of being European Champions is over after being beaten in a penalty shoot out.

The game was drawn 1-1 and then extra time had been played with no breakthrough, both teams looked very tired by the end of the game despite England having a great first half with Manchester United’s Luke Shaw scoring a blinder.

England had several chances to score however midway through the second half the team became very flat footed and energy levels were dropping letting in a poor performing Italian side who scored on the 67th minute with Bonucci hitting the back of Pickford’s net.

Nearing the end of second period of extra time Rashford and Sancho came on just in time for the penalty shoot out, this came back to bite the England manager during the penalty shoot out.

Rashford’s penalty was all over the place, he ran up to the ball and did some technique then came to a stop, the keeper went one way and Rashford had the entire net to score in and he missed! holding his head after the miss but showing no emotion.

Sancho stepped up did the right thing in the execution sadly not enough power and was easy for the keeper to save, it was now left to England keeper Pickford to do the heroic thing and save the Italians final penalty, and he saved it! we were back in with a chance and up steps 19-year-old Saka and he missed his penalty.

Some pundits asked the question if it was right to let a young player take such a penalty, Saka was consoled by many players as he became tearful, the only one though to show some emotion!

England though were lucky to even be in the final after a poor display previously against Denmark, a lucky penalty helping the team through, despite the loss tonight though England fans should be proud of how far they come this time around and helps inspire confidence in the future with Gareth Southgate as the manager.
