The English Schools Athletics Association (ESSA) has been left in a situation after sportswear firm New Balance decided to end sponsorship.
As a result the association has started a fundraiser which has at this time managed to get over £13,000 although they need around £100k to be able to operate as normal for 2022 unless a sponsor can be found.
Many athletes have come out in support of the association and all it does for athletics in the UK, Denise Lewis said on Twitter: “This vital grassroots organisation needs a little help, donate if you can.” and Katherine Merry said: “Again the thought of losing the invaluable schools athletics championships is heartbreaking, it’s the launchpad for so many successful athletes. I wouldn’t have achieved what I did without proudly my warks vest from the age of 12, it can’t be lost.”
It seems almost everyone at the ESSA works in a voluntarily capacity and are made up of existing or retired teachers according the Go Fund Me page.
Athletics in the UK is going strong, for the sport to continue finding and looking after the best talent we have for generations to come, funding of this vital organisation is crucial, we hope a sponsor can be found and in the meantime any donations will help the ESSA greatly.
