An investigation into road repairs in the UK by Accident Claims Advice was set up following an influx of inquiries relating to damages caused by potholes and poorly maintained roads.

Data obtained from Freedom of Information requests reveals Trafford Council have 15 roads set to be resurfaced as well as 21 roads that have be proposed for surface dressing repairs.

Trafford Council covers Alrtrincham and Sale West, Stretford and Urmston and Wythenshawe and Sale East.

Over the next financial year, which runs from April 2024 to March 2025, it has confirmed a budget of £990,000 for resurfacing.

A further £500,000 has been allocated for proposed surface dressings so far. The Council has a separate maintenance budget for roads for which they employ an external contractor on a Fixed Fee arrangement. This is used for repairs including potholes, winter maintenance, and gully cleaning.

Accident Claims Advice says: “Local authorities or councils are usually responsible for the maintenance and repair of public highways and pavements under the HIghways Act.

“This requires them to inspect highways regularly and repair them in an efficient manner when defects such as potholes are identified.

“Therefore, if you are injured by a pothole on a public highway that was known about but not rectified quickly, you could sue the council/local authority for your injuries. “

With UK councils now facing a potential major financial crisis with a £4bn funding gap estimated in the next two years, some authorities have forked out huge amounts in road maintenance repairs.
