Manchester will mark the ninth anniversary of the 22 May 2017 terror attack, which claimed 22 lives and left many others injured, this Friday.
As usual the permanent Glade of Light Memorial, near Manchester Cathedral, will be the focal point for personal remembrance and reflection throughout the day. On the morning of Friday 22 May, the new Lord Mayor of Manchester Cllr Shaukat Ali, Council Leader Cllr Bev Craig OBE and Council Chief Executive Tom Stannard will lay floral tributes on behalf of the city to those who lost their lives.
The names of those who lost their lives will also be read out on 22 May during Manchester Cathedral services at 9am (Morning Prayers), 1.10pm (Holy Communion) and 5.30pm (Choral Evensong) The cathedral will be open throughout the day for those who wish to light a candle or pray.
Two one-minute silences will take place at Manchester Victoria Station during the day – at 12 noon and 10.31pm, the exact anniversary of the attack. The Railway Chaplain will offer at the station’s memorial after the midday silence.
Council Leader Cllr Bev Craig OBE said:
“Manchester will never forget those who lost their lives in the 22 May 2017 terror attack, nor the many others who were injured or otherwise affected. Time passes but we will not allow their memories to fade.
“On the ninth anniversary of that terrible day, we also remember the remarkable solidarity shown by the city in refusing to give in to hatred – and the resilience and courage shown by the loved ones of those who were killed and by survivors.”
