A group of thirteen officers from the Firearms and Tactical Aid Units at Greater Manchester Police will embark on the National Three Peaks Challenge this weekend to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and Armed Forces charity, Walking With The Wounded (WWTW).
The National Three Peaks challenge will see the team climb the 3 tallest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales within 24 hours. The team will cover around 26 miles and almost 3,000 metres of ascent as they climb Ben Nevis in Scotland (1,344,), Scafell Pike in England (978m) and Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) in Wales (1,085m).
The team of officers will begin their challenge at Ben Nevis at 6am on Saturday 13th June, before driving to the picturesque Lake District to scale Scaffel Pike, followed by a further drive to Wales to complete their final climb up Yr Wyffada at around 1am. The vehicles they are travelling in have been donated by Greater Manchester Police, with fuel being covered by Irwin Mitchell Solicitors.
Speaking about the upcoming challenge, David Graham, Operational Firearms Commander, said:
“The Three Peaks Challenge isn’t going to be easy, especially as there will be very little sleep, but we’re fundraising because we have huge respect for the amazing work that Walking With The Wounded and Macmillan do every day. We all have our own personal stories of how these charities have helped our loved ones or even ourselves, and this is our way of giving back.”
Commenting on the challenge, David Lowe, North West Regional Manager at Walking With The Wounded, said: “I’m fortunate enough to see firsthand the profound impact fundraising has on the people we support and their families, so knowing that the GMP team are fundraising on our behalf means a great deal to everyone here. Taking on the National Three Peaks is a mammoth task and we really appreciate the commitment and effort involved.”
