Man rescued from Manchester Ship Canal in Partington

A man has been taken to hospital after he was rescued from Manchester Ship Canal in Partington.

Emergency Services responded just before midday on 9 August 2026 with firefighters sending two fire crews from Altrincham and Gorton stations including a water incident unit from Eccles fire station, an enhanced rescue unit from Leigh fire station also attended after getting reports of a person in the Manchester Ship Canal behind Lock Lane in Partington.

It took fire crews over an hour to rescue the man, once they got him out of the water North West Ambulance Service took over and the man was taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Shortly after 11.49am this morning (Sunday), two fire engines from Altrincham and Gorton fire stations, a water incident unit from Eccles fire station, and an enhanced rescue unit from Leigh fire station were called to reports of a person in the water at Lock Lane in Partington.

“Crews arrived quickly at the scene. Firefighters brought a man to safety from the Manchester Ship Canal using a rescue boat, before transferring him into the care of North West Ambulance Service. Crews were in attendance for around one hour and 25 minutes.”
