Afghan man charged with raping a teenage girl in Manchester City Centre

A 24-year-old Afghan man has been charged following reports he raped a 17-year-old girl on Hope Street, near Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester city centre, at around 1.30am on 14 July 2026.

Abdul Shinwari of no fixed abode, has been charged with two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, non-fatal strangulation and possession with intent to supply and was remanded into custody.

Shinwari will appear at Manchester Crown Court on 25 August 2026.

Specialist safeguarding officers from Greater Manchester Police are continuing to support the victim.
