Residents and political figures in Trafford have raised concerns about an issue on the Bridgewater Canal from Sale all the way past Broadheath.
The water’s surface has a light green colour to it in large parts of the canal and in various thickness, people have suggested it could be anything from algae to weeds. We can now confirm the issue is a serious one that needs urgent attention. On the surface is something called ‘duckweed’ and although harmless to humans will cause big problems.
Duckweed will cut off the oxygen in the canal which will kill off all the fish, ducks and geese. Swans and moorhens struggle in parts where the duckweed has thickened, it’s not just wildlife that will be affected as boats coming through could find the hulls being clogged up.
This is a serious issue and the Bridgewater Canal Company that is in place to look after the canal needs to get rid of the duckweed as soon as they can as it’s expanding further down the canal and in parts is so thick it looks more like a path which could confuse children or even pets which obviously is a major hazard.
