AN Opticians in Altrincham has launched a new dry eye procedure to improve comfort for customers experiencing symptoms of dry eye.

Specsavers Altrincham, which is locally owned and run, can now provide Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) procedures thanks to newly installed equipment.

The procedures use gentle light technology to improve the function of the eyelid glands, which play an important role in keeping the eyes comfortable and hydrated.

IPL uses pulses of light to gently warm the area around the glands, helping to clear blockages and restore the natural flow of oils into the tears. LLLT uses low-level light to support healthy gland function and improve tear quality. Together, these procedures can help address the root cause of dry eye and provide longer-lasting relief from symptoms.

The store can also provide the new ZEST service. This is a quick, comfortable and non-invasive procedure lasting around 10 to 20 minutes.

ZEST uses a natural, okra-based gel and a specialised swab to deep-clean the eyelids and lashes. By clearing away the biofilm, debris, and mites that block vital oil glands, it delivers immediate, soothing relief, allowing customers to regain comfort and focus on their daily lives.

Dry eye symptoms can vary from person to person, but commonly include sore, irritated or itchy eyes, redness, watery eyes and blurred vision. The condition is becoming increasingly common due to factors such as hormones, increased screen time, air conditioning, heating and ageing.

Tom Crowther, optometrist director at Specsavers Altrincham, says: ‘Many people assume dry eyes are simply something they must live with, but untreated dry eye can significantly impact quality of life, comfort and even vision. Symptoms can sometimes worsen over time if the underlying cause is not addressed properly.

‘If you’re experiencing symptoms of dry eye, it’s important to have them assessed by an optometrist. They can assess the health of the eye and eyelids, identify the root cause of the dry eye problem and recommend the most appropriate procedure plan.

‘In some cases, symptoms of dry eye can also overlap with other eye conditions, so a professional assessment helps ensure customers receive the correct care and advice.’

Speaking about the new equipment, Mr Crowther adds: ‘We’re delighted to be able to provide these new procedures, which will greatly benefit the people of Altrincham.

‘With Intense Pulsed Light and Low-Level Light Therapy procedures, customers who have dry, itchy and irritated eyes from contact lenses, or those who rely solely on daily drops to comfort their eyes, can benefit from targeted procedure designed to provide longer-lasting relief.’
