Residents at a care home in Sale enjoyed an afternoon of fun and friendly competition as local school children joined them to celebrate the simple joys of traditional games.
Care UK’s Oakfield Croft, on Oakfield, teamed up with visitors from Forest Park Preparatory School to take part in an intergenerational games afternoon, bringing different generations together to rediscover the simple pleasure of playing traditional board games together.
On the day, residents and their competing rivals took turns playing classics such as Scrabble, dominoes and football games. Plenty of laughter was had as residents taught the children how to play while reminiscing about happy memories of enjoying these classic games in their own childhoods.
Resident John Howard said: “I enjoyed the football games. It brought back lots of memories; my favourite childhood games were football and dominoes.”
The event was part of Care UK’s ‘Bored Games’ initiative – a nationwide campaign intended to revive the magic of family and community games nights. At a time when social media and online gaming have transformed how people spend their leisure time, the initiative is celebrating the simple joys of spending time together playing traditional board games and the memories they can create.
From community events and intergenerational activities, Care UK care homes across the UK are celebrating togetherness and reconnecting residents with the games that shaped their younger years.
Roxanne Walsh, Home Manager at Oakfield Croft, said: “We had such a wonderful time opening our doors to Forest Park Preparatory School. It was fantastic to see
everyone getting involved and enjoying some friendly competition playing board games.
“For many residents, traditional games nights represent a lifetime of treasured memories, so this was a great opportunity to revisit those moments while creating new memories with the younger generation.
“It was truly heartwarming to watch residents reminisce and share stories about games they enjoyed when they were younger, while also discovering new favourites together.
“We’d like to extend a huge thank you to Forest Park Preparatory School for joining us and making the day so special. We’re already looking forward to our next games event!”
