Trafford MV’s run of good form continued in drizzly conditions at Aldwinians RFC. With three back to back wins MV were in confident mood but with Aldwinians sitting 3 places above them in the table the odds were in favour of the home side.
MV opened well and took play to Aldwinians with good early possession and some good forward play putting the home side on their back foot. This brought early success as scrum half Pat Eccles comfortably converted a penalty on 5 mins to go 0-3 ahead. MV kept control for a period but Aldwinians were competitive and well in the game. On 20 mins a good pick up and drive brought a try for the home side back row 5-3. The sides exchanged play for the remainder of the half and as the half time break approached MV struck positively with another Eccles penalty to swap halves at 5-6 to MV.
Aldwinians were knocking on MV’s door but defence was resolute, which is a hall mark of MV’s game whether winning or losing ! With 5 mins of the second half gone pressure was again turned into penalty points as Pat Eccles was again on target with a good kick to go 5-9 ahead. The hard work in defence was starting to hit MV and as stamina was being tested then concentration wained and mistakes were made. Free kicks and penalties were conceded and Aldwinians benefitted from a close range try on the hour to go ahead 10-9.
Both side knew the importance of this game in a competitive league and MV struck back after 10 minutes play as Eccles was again on the board with a superb drop goal to snatch the lead back for MV 10-12. Neither side were giving ground easily and the end to end battle continued. Aldwinians were next to strike with a penalty of their own to sneak back in front by a single point 13-12 with 5 minutes on the clock. MV skipper Andy Quigley was leading by example following hid return from suspension but it was Man Of The Match Pat Eccles who was again on hand to convert the final concluding points of the game with his 5th successful kick of the game to seal the game at 13-15.
This was a pleasing result for MV and was an all round good performance for the team who have now won 4 games on the bounce and have climbed to 10th in the Lancs / Cumbria League. This weekend MV welcome Burnley as to their MacPherson Park home and are looking to provide fireworks for the spectators with yet another win to continue their climb up the table.
MV’s game will be followed by their Bonfire and Firework display – gates open at 6.00pm – public welcome (no parking) family tickets £20
