Ex 100m and 200m sprinter Darren Campbell aged 44 is recovering in hospital tonight after he developed a bleed on the brain.
It is thought that because of his fitness he pulled through, had he not been doctors claim he may not have survived.
Campbell won many things in his time as an international athlete, he won his first medal in a 4x100m relay getting bronze in 1997, his first gold came in 1998 at the European Championships in Budapest, after winning many medals for team and country Campbell retired from athletics in 2006.
The Manchester born athlete is expected after several months to make a full recovery.
