Trafford MV Rugby Club began their final stages of pre-season with a friendly against Llandudno however for one reason or another could not play and so thankfully Leigh RFC stepped in.
MV opened the more lively of the teams with early scores for Pat Eccles and Rob Dutton for a 12-0 lead and MV continued to be the stronger outfit for the first half. Both teams showed good fitness although work on strength training and other areas needs some working on before the start of what will be an exiting new season for MV.
Half time saw the teams change ends at 19-5 for MV.
Multiple changes for both teams at the interval saw a change in fortunes as Leigh began to get the upper hand in the second half. Both teams were trying to play expansive rugby in excellent conditions and a large crowd were entertained throughout. MV scored further second half tries through Kingdon, Passley and Matthie with Eccles adding conversions. MV’s new head coach Richard Phillips was able to get an understanding for his new players and can now see how they perform in match situations and when under pressure.
There is a good base there from past seasons performances but plenty of room for improvement of MV are to make their mark in the ADM Lancashire Premier League this season.
The game ended in a 31-31 draw which was truly an entertaining game for the big crowd watching on.
MV are still awaiting the return of a couple of players from summer breaks and are also looking to add new players to their squad (contact Greg on 07834 857905). Lancashire Rugby Coach Warren Spragg will be conducting a coaching workshop at MV this (Wed 22nd) and MV will hope they pick up some good practice ahead of their Lancashire Trophy game which will be held under floodlights at the Club (M33 6LR) on Wed Aug 29th ko 7.30pm.
