Trafford MV travelled to Wigan’s Douglas Valley ground in fine conditions were in confident mood.
The first twenty minutes played out quite evenly with the home side driving hard at MV who defended well and attacked on the break.
Wigan broke the deadlock though and Matthews scored under the posts with Jukes adding the conversion. Another score quickly followed as Wigan took control and Livesey was put over for a 12 – 0 lead.
Other opportunities were fluffed by the home side as MV’s dogged defence kept the attacks under pressing defence.
As the first half was ticking to a close MV were camped on the home line and Wigan suffered a yellow card and conceded a penalty from Pat Eccles to close the half at 12-3.
MV maintained there good form into the second half and forced a second penalty, again from Eccles, to narrow to 12- 6.
MV were competing well with Danny Burke and Andy Clegg taking good lineout and loose ball.
MV’s big let down though was ball retention and often good ball was being lost in contact. Wigan took the initiative back when a crash ball off a good scrum was taken by Dwyer who split MV’s defence, converted for a 17-6 lead.
Wigan again fell foul of the referee when a high tackle was punished with another yellow card this time for Matthews.
MV took a quick tap penalty which resulted in a close range score from the experienced Stuart Crampton to close the gap to 17-11. MV were dominant in these later phases as Wigan tired and MV kept plugging away searching for another score.
Discipline proved Wigans downfall and a series of penalties took MV deep into the Wigan half and the ball was swung wide right for MV to strike the vital blow with seconds left on the clock.
Centre Matt Coxon looked to have fumbled the opportunity but smartly recovered and wrong footed the defence by stepping inside and crossing the line to rapturous emotions from his teammates. Pat Eccles converted the crucial conversion for a single point win 17-18 over a deflated Wigan.
