In excellent conditions Trafford MV welcomed Toc H to MacPherson Park for this ADM League Cup match.
The visitors brought good form into the game and they opened well with 2 tries in the first quarter and looked well organised and dangerous.
Their lead could have been more but for some woeful conversion attempts. Despite heavy pressure MV kept themselves in contention with 2 well taken penalties from captain Pat Eccles playing out of position at full back. with the score at 6-10 and half time approaching Toc H were looking in control.
Then an impromptu break out of defence saw 2nd row Chris Ward attack down the left flank. With winger Gaz Bevan holding his wide position Ward cut inside leaving the defence in two minds for Chris Ward to race over the line close to the posts with covering defence closing in. Eccles converted for MV to go into the break 13 – 10 as referee Dan Taylor blew the whistle.
MV had competed well be Toc H were kicking themselves at being behind and this was eveident as they cam out firing on all cylinders for the second half.
Two quick tries once again by Toc’s as they opened up a 13 – 20 lead and were looking good. This was proving to be one of MV’s better performances and it was MV’s influential flanker Danny Burke who once again brought MB back into contention with a surging close range try, Eccles converting to get back at 20-20.
However the extent of Toc’s overall pressure took it toll on MV as the tiring defence was exploited late on for the visiting team to close off the game at 20-29.
MV will surely get themselves sorted out in the not too distant future if they continue to show the effort and determination evident in this game. Coach ‘Kit Brammer’ will be asking more of individuals and from the team as a whole looking to turn the corner before we hit the New Year.
This coming weekend MV have a similar scenario as the two clubs meat once again this time in league league action as MV seek to claw themselves away from the relegation zone by turning over a 5th placed Toc H side. Kick off as MacPherson Park (M33 6LR) is 2.15pm and spectators are very welcome to show support for local sport.
