Greater Manchester is open for Christmas, so get the most out of it and travel by Metrolink – the UK’s largest light rail network – to enjoy great days out with family and friends.

For those looking for a little inspiration – as well as an easy and convenient way to get around – Metrolink has launched Open for Christmas, providing people with loads of ideas for fun-packed days, exciting nights out and festive events.

People can use the new website to find festive destination inspiration and fun for all the family, whether it’s a night out at Lightopia in Heaton Park or a food tour from Altrincham food market to secret hideouts in the Northern Quarter.

Once you’ve chosen your destination, the best travel journey for you will be generated including advice on the nearest tram stop.

There will also be lots of festive prizes up for grabs in the countdown to Christmas, so keep your eyes peeled on the Open for Christmas website and TfGM social media channels.

Travelling by tram not only helps to avoid busy roads and hefty taxi rates, for those thinking of having a drink at their Christmas party, during a catch-up with friends or when out for meal, it’s a safe and reliable way to get home.

There are trams running every single day over the festive period, except for Christmas Day itself – and people are being encouraged to check before they travel. Services will finish early on Christmas Eve but will run slightly later on New Year’s Eve, for those wanting to party their way into the new year.

Passengers are also reminded that, unless exempt, the wearing of face coverings is a legal requirement when using public transport.

TfGM is working with operators to make sure our networks are as safe as possible, and transport staff, along with police, will be out and about throughout, providing reassurance and offering help and advice to customers.

For a full breakdown of tram services operating over the Christmas period, including tram and bus services, and Travelshop opening times, please visit TfGM’s dedicated travel advice page and for those looking to avoid the crowds people can also check the quietest times to travel on the network.

TfGM’s Head of Metrolink, Danny Vaughan, said: “Open for Christmas is a great way to make the most of the festive season by travelling with Metrolink and supporting local businesses at the same time.

“I’d also like to remind people that services will be busier during the festive season, so remember to check our website and across our social media channels before you travel.

“Also consider travelling at quieter times if you can and remember to wear a face covering when travelling, unless exempt. This is now a legal requirement and is intended to help make sure you, and those around, have a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year.”
