Altrincham residents have proven they are among the most active in the world, securing a top spot and turning their physical activity into a powerful force for social good in the prestigious ‘Let’s Move for a Better World’ campaign.
Trafford Leisure’s move Altrincham finished first in Greater Manchester and fourth in the whole of the UK, in the campaign led by global wellness equipment provider, Technogym. This placed them 35th out of thousands of participating gyms and leisure facilities globally.
For 17 days, 400 members at move Altrincham pushed their physical limits to rack up more than 2.5 million ‘moves’; Technogym’s universal measure of physical activity.
The impact of this effort extends far beyond physical wellness, as Technogym’s partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) means that for every 2,000 ‘moves’ collected during the challenge, they will provide a school meal to children in need. move Altrincham’s community contributed enough ‘moves’ to provide more than 1,250 free meals for vulnerable children across the world.
Jo Cherrett is CEO of Trafford Leisure, a community interest company wholly owned by Trafford Council, which manages leisure in Trafford on behalf of the council, using any profits and assets for community benefit. She says: “We are incredibly proud of our members’ success. It’s fantastic to see how their hard work has helped vulnerable children. At Trafford Leisure, our objective is simple: we want to help our community to live healthier and happier, and this challenge shows that when we move together we don’t just improve our own well-being, we can change lives. Securing the top spot in Greater Manchester proves that move Altrincham is leading the way in wellness, and I invite everyone in our community to find their own way to stay active.”
Adam Spence, Fitness and Wellbeing Experience Manager, move Altrincham said: “It’s a great achievement for move Altrincham. The fitness team deserves a lot of credit; they’re genuinely passionate about helping people enjoy exercise, and their consistency and care is what’s driven our success. I’m excited to see what we can build on from here and to welcome even more people through the doors in the coming years.”
