New infrastructure is badly needed in Partington and finally something is happening which promotes pedestrian and cycling safety.
The City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement has funded the improvements that will see:
- New and improved pedestrian crossings on Manchester Road, Warburton Lane and Central Road.
- A new junction with traffic lights at Manchester New Road and Central Road.
- New walking and cycling links along parts of Manchester Road and Warburton Lane.
- Traffic calming measures including speed bumps on roads including Broadway, Central Road and Lock Lane.
- New 20mph speed limits on Broadway, Chapel Lane and Lock Lane.
- Improvements to bus stops to make getting on and off buses easier and safer.
- A new footway on Chapel Lane from the Bowling Green to the park.
- Dropped crossings on Warburton Lane, Manchester Road, Broadway, Lock Lane, Chapel Lane, Central Road, Wood Lane and Oak Road.
The area needs new and improved pedestrian crossings on the roads mentioned above, a new junction created on Manchester New Road and Central Road with traffic lights seems interesting, new cycling links along parts of Manchester Road and Warburton Lane are welcomed although modest.
Road humps never worked to reduce vehicles going fast and tend to degrade badly which is bad for cyclists wanting to be on the road and not in a cycle lane, for 20mph limits to work it will need to come with traffic cameras which will help with enforcement.
Disabled people have always been overlooked in Partington, the plans to have safety improvements at bus stops will be very welcomed, also more buses should come with these plans!
A path that goes from the Bowling Green connecting to the other paths in Cross Lane Park will be barely beneficial to residents.
Dropped crossings improve safety for everyone and more so those on wheelchairs and the elderly, this will also make it easier for cyclists to go on the pavement which then makes things unsafe if the cyclist is going too fast, although markings and road signage could help with this potential issue.
The new road and pavement infrastructure is not finished yet and will look better once completed.
Cllr Tom Ross, Leader of Trafford Council, said:
“The work is going very well. Local people are enjoying the changes so far. We thank residents, businesses and community organisations for their patience.
“The end result will be safer and more accessible routes for anyone on their way to and from school, work, shops and services.
“We are pleased to be able to show the progress so far thanks to our contractor, George Cox and Sons. This work ties in with our Council priorities to foster a thriving economy and address climate change.”
